I’ve been thinking (again) and guess what?
There are some thinks I think you should know.
Because.
#1
If you watch Young Adult (and I think you should) and you’re a GenX/GenY hybrid like me, be prepared for a sanity-threatening earworm.
You may find yourself stuck with this song by 4 Non Blondes for a day or so. You’ve been warned.
The 90s. You just had to be there.
#2
I think you should know about my big carrots.
(That was probably the best and most ridiculous thing I ever wrote on my blog. Love it. It says it all. It should be in the header. I digress).
I like my carrots big (get your mind out the gutter) because you can cut them into big disks or strips that are perfect for dipping. I blanch them and keep them in the fridge for easy access.
Don’t even come at me with baby-cut or petite. No way. I grab a few of these at the Farmer’s Market every weekend when I pick up my crack-hummus and I’m never more than 30 seconds away from happiness.

I think you should know that eating at Olive Garden is good for your soul.
Darden Corporation, which owns a lot of chain restaurants like Red Lobster and Olive Garden, donate their leftover food to feed hungry kids and families.
Other restaurants participating are KFC, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, Cheesecake Factory, Chipotle…(complete list here).
The restaurants work with this awesome organization; going out of their way to makes sure no food goes to waste.
It’s safe and sterile, of course.
And awesome.
If you eat at these places you can give yourself cool points.
- What do you think I should know?

I loved all the 90s music in that movie, but the movie itself? Not so much.
I once talked with an OG (Olive Garden, for those in the know) waiter who told me that they have rules about the number of breadsticks they bring. The first basket they bring has enough sticks for everyone to have 1, plus 2 extra. After that, all baskets have less than the number of people. He told me the amount they throw out and it made me sick.
Well, we got breadstick shafted then (couldn’t resist!), because we didn’t get 2 more sticks than number of eaters to start. Oh well, they taste nothing like they did even 5 years ago….
Hopefully these people will get the most nutritious stuff and not all of the garbage. I am all for people being fed, don’t get me wrong, but I hope they get the ‘best nutrient containing’ stuff from those donating. :O)
Oh, hey isn’t that the Original “clean all the things” pic from Hyperbole and a half? Too funny!
Thanks for sharing the info about this program!
Watch out for those carrots, they look like they might take over the world!! We grew a garden when I was growing up and we had HUGE carrots, all kinds of crazy appendages too, so funny!
Take care, HeatherInTX :O)
The movie was — I enjoyed watching it. I love Charlize — what an amazing actress. Also the guy from King of Queens and United States of Tara is in it. I love him. The ending was meh. I wonder if the book is better. But not enough to read it.
I actually knew the Olive Garden thing because my bros and sister all worked there. Growing up there was a year or two we always had the breadsticks frozen in our freezer because they’d take them home. We also had a lot of their salad dressing but I assume they just lifted that. LOL.
The movie certainly sounds intriguing! I am sure my husband will get it when it goes ‘cheap at Hastings’ i.e. movie rental sales @ BOGO free ;o)
Oh my goodness, so you probably know what I mean about the breadsticks being WAY better back in the day!!
Too funny about the salad dressing!! :O)
Perhaps you should eat something more substantial than a carrot, to meet your daily calories a day you would need to eat about 40 carrots every day, just worried about your health, please take care of yourself
.
I get where you are coming from — and I know you know that I don’t just eat carrots and hummus and all that because I totally get your point….more grains, etc. I work at it and appreciate your continued effort to, i guess, talk about what really matters. I tend to just…not work at recovery 100% of the time and that is probably what I should be doing.
40 carrots a day, though. I’d turn oompa-loompa shade.
Hey Missy,
First off, that many carrots would not have enough of the right nutrients to sustain good health, even IF the calorie count was up! I know you know that and I bet Lisa knows that.
It is interesting to me that someone who is concerned about your weight/health (which I am also) would give “need to eat 40 carrots every day….” as ‘encouragement’ for your recovery.
I know that you are interested in the food plans of FAA and the other 12 step plans, I would encourage you to focus on those trying to come as close to meeting their requirements/suggestions as you can. :O)
I don’t even feel that a person who is very underweight should HAVE to eat foods such as wheat products, or grains in general, certainly not sugar! There are other more nutrient packed foods that give one “more bang for their nutrition buck”.
I can see the will to live in you Missy, I can ‘see’ it in what you write. You seem like someone who loves to have a great time, doing fun things, singing, the wittiness in your posts. Don’t let go of that, don’t let your fear of failure (I have a feeling most EDs are fear of getting well/relapse, repeat) stop you from finding a plan that works for YOU and sticking with it.
I’ll write more later, sorry to hijack the post….
Take care
HeatherInTX :O)
Thanks Heather.
You’re right about variety being necessary for sure.
Lisa didn’t mean it like that …. I get where she is coming from, as she has commented here before and so I “know” her if that makes sense. She knows her stuff and is a kick-ass encourager.
And I mean that…she don’t pussy foot.
I like that.
I like your “bang for the nutrition buck” philosophy and I REALLY have to think about getting back on a meal plan. I do not like them bacause for me that spells restriction — it is hard to explain. I suppose I have never been able to follow one 100% and so I end up losing weight. I actually feel like I eat more without one.
Missy, this is actually in reply to how you feel that when you follow a meal plan that you find that more restricting. I’m curious if you will expound on that more. I am not able to follow any “meal plan” and when I have “had to”, it almost felt more of a way to pander to the issues I happen to have with restriction.
I know you say it’s hard to explain, but if you would be willing to either here or through email, kind of share what that is like for you, I’m quite intrigued.
Carrots that big scare me a little. No; a lot. So do pumpkins that are insanely large and only able to be moved by use of a forklift. That’s just TOO big!
And….I think you should know that your randomness is so my cup of tea. Rooibos to be more specific. As is; no added sweetener.
Also, I spied the words, “Oompa Loompa” on this page which made me a bit giddy as Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory circa 1971 is one of my favorite movies. How is that for generation WHAT?!
maybe i do need to write about this as an entry. sigh. can’t i just think about kimchi, carrots and butterflies? And Lauryn Hill? lol.
I did write once about my decision to stray beyond the plan I was initially following here:
http://missymiller.wordpress.com/2010/12/04/eating-by-numbers/
gosh looking back it’s like… yeah…so how’s that working out for ya? lol. BUT anywhoo..
Willy Wonka oh, HAIL yeah.
Actually that may have been one of my favorite movies in High School. Trippy as all get out.
Oh, Missy, I LOVED Young Adult. Perhaps I have a sick sense of humor, but I think Charlize Theron gave probably the most successfully unpleasant but compulsively watchable mess of a character ever. Loved it.
Things you should know? This is not ’90s, but maybe it should be. Have you watched this Robyn music video? It’s so so so bad and ridiculous I have watched it 80 million times. You may hate it… but oh man, it’s unreal.
omg. that video.
thank you forever. oh…the floor action….and the Grapevine! she does the grapevine!
I’m going to add the grapevine into my regular exercise routine because of this video. I shouldn’t be inspired by this, but I have been.
Get your groove Robyn. (It’s a horrible song really.) Those platforms take me back to my raving days.
i have an acute mental picture in my head …it involves sweatbands and knee highs (i know you don’t call them that but I forget what you call them)….and I know you have them. the baseball kind…real old school with two stripes at the top. I shall expect delivery to my inbox start of business Monday. (0; heehee…shall.
Your naughty humor positively slays me
That is a monster carrot; can you handle it? I’m just wondering.
I think you should know I’m moving close to Florida this summer
Nice girl! i need to go hound your blog to find out where.
and i actually believe there is a perfect size of carrot. not tooo big, not to small.
Wow, that is one large carrot!!! What do feed your veggies in Florida?
sunshine
Wow. I have one very jealous rabbit. That carrot is insane!
I am addicted to carrots, the larger the better! I actually have begun telling the shop servers they are for the rabbits.. I am pretty sure there is something like crack in carrots, because I just can’t stop munching them once I get started.
xx
We have a food service like that here, called Foodbank, and it’s great. When I used to volunteer we would get donations like that but we were legally unable t use them. The laws have been amended in recent years so this food can go to foodbank or directly to charities to be redistributed
carrots have lots of sugars and that makes them so “once you stop you don’t want to stop” like.
which is a good thing, for us.
i hope there are more movements in the US to allow smaller, family owned restaurants without the means to really fund this sort of endeavor will get clearance to donate their food without fear of repercusssions. currently they can’t.
here are some totally random things i think you should know:
#1 i have no idea what gen i fall under, though i think it might be pre-historic. i am at my desk streaming some florence and the machine on my computer, one of the students walks in and says “aren’t you too old to be listening to that?”. ya…my first thought…’kids these days’. The only worse thought could have been, ‘when i was your age…’ Thankfully, those words did not come out of mouth! especially because i’m not even an old lady!!! i’m only 37
random thought #2
but here is the link
when i was at whole foods last night all i could think about was that whole foods parking lot song, the place was a mad house. it was like they had started selling kombucha again and an underground memo had gone out. i have no idea how to embed the video (because i’m an old lady
Your in my Gen. X/Y. We are our own breed. I don’t like to identify with Gen X because it goes SO far back.
But man…kids these days. Our generation and the next are going to be SO much more different than I believe a generation ever has. Mainly because of technology and social media. I am still SO SO SO happy we didn’t have internet in High school. Can you imagine facebook? .
Also, that song was stuck in my head each time I went WF after it first came out. I guess that was earworm payback.
I don’t normally eat at those places, since I usually eat at local restaurants, but I think it’s awesome when ANY restaurant donates to charity. I know a cupcake shop in town donates to the local soup kitchen occasionally. That’s probably the only time any of those people will get a chance to have one of those cupcakes from that shop. It’s a great thing to do.
Love your big carrot- it is huge!
Haven’t heard of that Young Adult movie but now I want to see it…
I’m all about local places to, because they have chefs that can accomodate my order. I know that is frowned upon but so be it. Just being Honest. I like fish without all the sauces and stuff..
I understand. I always have a crazy complicated order too no matter where I go to eat.
It sounds a great idea!
Blooomin heck that carrot is gargantuan!!!!!!!! Seriously, never seen one that huge!! I tend to prefer little ones like the chantenay ones but then I’ve never eaten a whopper like that so how can I truly mean that preference?!
I like my carrots raw!
When you cut it into disks, most of them are like the size of my palm or a little smaller. Then I resort to big slabs near the end. Perfect for dip action.
that is massive, did they put ‘roids in the soil or something?!!
no..organic farmer’s market…the veggies are all shapes and sizes and deformities…lol…the way God intended…kind of like…US!
Yes yes yes, so true! I often say that if God intended us to be all the same shape and size He would have rolled us off a conveyer belt/production line. We would probably look very plastic and boring. But He made us all different because He is an ARTIST and a creative being. I also look at this amazing world we live in and think, the same God who created that, created me! How awesome is that
