It was a rough day at the office on Friday. This new guy my boss hired? Total clown. I posted the full video on Facebook….but this little clip is my favorite.
Ahhh…the things we knew when we were two.
Food is not complicated.
It’s just food.
We may be complicated.
We certainly overcomplicate things.
But Food is just Food.
As we grow up, we un-learn almost as much as we learn.
When did we decide we weren’t perfect just as we were? That food was anything more than food? That eating was something complicated? When did we begin to un-learn everything we knew when we were two? This weekend let’s try and simplify.
I planned on writing about something entirely different. It involved me over-complicating food. (It also features a video of me eating and its not flattering at all.) I’m gonna save that for another time. For now? It’s all about being simple.
If you like kids, chicken dancing and want to hear my nephew giggle you can check out the video in its entirety:
PS – This is my brother Greg’s son. Braeden is two years old. His father (my brother) died a little over a year ago. Please take a second to say a prayer for Brae.
- What is your earliest memory of “over-complicating” food? It’s actually a hard question to answer. Think about it….

I love the name Braedon – and he is super cute. I can’t imagine growing up without a father, but I’m sure little Braedon will have tons of positive influences in his life!
Im sure he will!
AMEN girl, food is simple! its fuel!!
It’s fuel and it can also be fun, too! But it’s just food.
Eat and move on. (0:
Hmm, that is a hard one..that first time I over-complicated food….? I dunno, in terms of “over complicating”… Maybe when I was little and didn’t want to eat vegetables before I’d even tried them and made a big deal of before eating it, then eating them and deciding they might not taste too good to a little kid, but they weren’t gonna kill me. My trick when I was a little kid was to eat all the vegetables FIRST then eat the “good part” last. That way if I was eating a turkey burger with cooked spinach I’d eat the spinach first, so that way the last taste in my mouth would be turkey burger, not the spinach… I remember telling this to my younger cousin who put them off last and then had to try to get throught the spinach. ^_^” Of course I like spinach now XD..Raw tastes better, cooked is eh. Must be the memories lol.
Kids can be finicky with the green stuff — I am learning from watching my neices and nephews. I was a good eater growing up ironically. Thank goodness we outgrow it!
Awwww!
Braeden is probably the cutest baby I’ve ever seen (besides Baby Miguel, my brother. But he can’t talk yet, haha).
It’s amazing how much we can learn from these adorable creatures!
Sometimes I feel they know so much more then us…
That’s what I mean! They do know more innately….we “unlearn” some vital stuff.
Now that we are grown we have to differentiate the good lessons from the bad…
get back to the part of us that never dieted, never lost or gained a pound, never abused their body, never judged a body part as anything but “my thigh”
You are completely right…I was with my Godson on Christmas (and Goddaughter and their parents) and it was amazing just to watch him sit and play in/enjoy his food!
PS I really stopped by to tell you something! I was in Target in the party isle and they had The Very Hungry Caterpillar stickers
I Die…
Target is dangerous on my wallet. I surely would have got them.
I mean…I love stickers.
And..you know.. the hungry caterpillar.

Braeden is adorable Missy and I can tell you’re a wonderful auntie!! He’s so lucky to have you in his life : ).
I have no clue when I over complicated food for the first time. Before anorexia kicked in I would often eat emotionally…so even then I was over complicating it. Eat when hungry…stop when full. It’s so simple! I just wish it felt that simple : /. We will get there someday…
Stay strong Missy!

No clue? Me neither…exactly my point about the question. It’s like after a while I stared thinking…wait…I never really did overcompicate it …something else in my brain did.

What an ironic post Missy! I love it. It is what it is- simple. We shouldn’t tale anything for granted. Brae is too cute, he is lucky up have you in his life :]

It is what it is.
I always wish that I hadn’t UNLEARNED the things about food from my childhood. I see my nieces and nephews so free and it makes me happy.
thanks for sharing this. Praying for Brae and your family!

Love the pic of the two of you-too cute! I have a tendency to overcomplicate food, weigh the pros and cons on what i’m in the mood for vs. what’s a smart choice-i love your philosophy of “food is food”
Yup…lets just git her done and get back to the playground…ya know?
PS-i’ve awarded you the stylish blogger award on my blog-the post will be up soon!
I doubt it will be because of my wardrobe! LOL. Thanks!
Awww hes so cutee! You’re right, food shouldn’t be complicated at all! We eat when we’re hungry, stop when we’re full. Sometimes we eat too much, and sometimes we eat too little, but its not a big deal and shouldn’t at all be obsessed about. One day that will hopefully happen for everyone(: And diets won’t exist either!
Exactly!!!!
i’m new to commenting on your awesome insightful inspiring blog but i’ve just went through and read every post and comment (obsess much?). it’s funny because i clearly remember where, when, and why i started over complicating food or i should say my thoughts about food. i was 4, i was on the dining room floor, and i thought it was sooo cool that i ate nothing but cheese that day, so i tried it the next day with pears, and so on and so forth until i became a veritable mess with my eating habits. but aside from that silly story i wanted to thank you for taking steps forward (and steps back, it’s only human) and putting it out there for other people to see and learn from.
Wow! Nice to “bleet” you!
I am heart wrenched at hearing such an early tale of wonky eating. I hope you are in a good place now? I’d love to know more about you. (0:
